Money Mistakes I See All the Time

Planning a wedding is emotional — and Asheville is stunning — which is why it’s easy to blow your budget on the wrong things. As an Asheville wedding planner, I’ve seen every money trap there is. Here’s how to dodge the ones that hurt the most.

1. Going “Venue Broke”

It’s like going house broke — when you buy a gorgeous house but can’t afford to decorate or go out with friends because the mortgage eats everything.

Couples fall in love with a dreamy venue, sign the contract, and then realize they have no budget left for the things that actually make the wedding an experience: florals, food, entertainment, design, and guest comfort.

Planner tip: Before signing, run your full budget with your planner. We’ll show you how that $20K venue actually pushes your total spend to $150K — or what sacrifices it forces elsewhere.

2. Forgetting Asheville-Specific Costs

Our mountains aren’t plug-and-play. Hidden costs can stack up fast:

  • Transportation: Remote venues = shuttles and drivers ($7K+ easy).
  • Rain Plans: Clear tents + power + flooring can eat $8K–$20K.
  • Vendor Travel: Bringing in out-of-town teams means extra delivery, lodging, and time charges.

Budget for these early or you’ll get crushed later.

3. Underestimating Design Spend

Pinterest boards don’t come with price tags. Editorial design isn’t just “add flowers.” It’s layered — linens, rentals, lighting, props, signage, paper goods.

Start with a realistic per person estimate (I tell my couples $1K per guest for true luxury) so you can allocate properly.

4. Prioritizing Pretty Over Guest Experience

That massive install is gorgeous but if guests can’t find parking, can’t get to the bathroom, or are freezing under a tent — they’ll remember the discomfort.

Invest in transportation, heaters/coolers, and creature comforts. That’s the luxury no one brags about but everyone feels.

5. Booking Vendors Without a Planner’s Guidance

Every vendor contract is different, and the fine print matters: power needs, delivery hours, venue restrictions, noise cut-offs. A planner sees the red flags before you sign. Booking blindly often means paying twice or losing deposits.

6. Forgetting the Hidden “Last 10%”

There’s always a last push — tips, overtime, last-minute décor tweaks, rentals, rain gear, umbrellas. Add a 10% buffer so you’re not panicking the final week.

Why a Planner Saves You Money (Really)

People assume hiring a planner is an extra expense. But I consistently save my couples from “venue broke” choices, vendor mismatch fees, and surprise mountain add-ons. Smart planning keeps the overall spend under control and the final look elevated.

Bottom Line

If you want a wedding that’s gorgeous and financially sane, don’t go in blind. Build a full budget before you sign a single contract — especially the venue. Work with a local Asheville wedding planner who knows the true costs and will help you spend where it counts.
